SALES TIP OF THE MONTH: How to Attract Your Perfect Clients

Over the next several months, I will be sharing secrets on how to attract clients that are best for you. After over 20 years in sales, I've learned there are things we can do to make sure we work with who we want to work with.

You may be asking yourself, "What difference does it make who I work with?" "My client list is full now, I don't need to worry about it."

Ask yourself how many of your clients are really a match.

You can start the process of defining your perfect client by doing this simple exercise:

  • What type of people do you like to work with?
  • What profession are they in?
  • Make a list of desired demographics such as age, income and family status, location of home or office, outside interests.
  • How do you want your clients to treat you?

Here are a few ways to know if you need to cut a client or end your engagement quickly:

  • You are really stressed after visiting with them.
  • The account is not profitable because they take more time than you have set aside and they are not willing to pay anymore.
  • They don't pay in a timely manner.

Before 2006 ends, make a list of your clients and compare it to your perfect client description and evaluate whether they should stay on your list or if you should find a way to disengage by the end of this year.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH: SurveyMonkey

SurveyMonkey, www.surveymonkey.com, is a great resource to help you stay in touch with your clients. The website allows you to send out short surveys for free. I use it frequently with clients to get feedback on my courses and what they want to learn about in the future. I am writing a script for a franchise sales center and I recently gained valuable information by sending a survey to random people on my own email list who are their typical customers.

SurveyMonkey keeps all your surveys and answers in one location so you can always go back and refer to what your clients said. It's very well organized, very easy to use and is one of my favorite free resources.
